Titer Test

A titer test is a blood test that measures the level of antibodies in an animal's blood to determine if existing immunity from prior vaccination is still adequate.

Definition

A titer test is a blood test that measures the level of antibodies in an animal's blood to determine if existing immunity from prior vaccination is still adequate.

In-Depth

What You Need to Know

Titer testing has become increasingly popular as an alternative to automatic revaccination. By measuring antibody levels for core diseases (distemper, parvovirus, adenovirus in dogs; panleukopenia in cats), veterinarians can determine if a pet still has protective immunity. If titers are adequate, the vaccine may be deferred. This approach is endorsed by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and is particularly useful for pets with a history of vaccine reactions, immunocompromised pets, elderly pets, and owners who prefer minimal vaccination. Rabies vaccination, however, is required by law regardless of titer results.
