Refraction Test

A refraction test is an eye exam procedure that measures how light bends as it passes through the cornea and lens to determine if corrective lenses are needed.

Definition

A refraction test is an eye exam procedure that measures how light bends as it passes through the cornea and lens to determine if corrective lenses are needed.

In-Depth

What You Need to Know

Refraction is the core of a comprehensive eye exam — it determines your eyeglass or contact lens prescription. During the test, you look through a device called a phoropter while the optometrist flips between different lenses, asking "which is clearer, one or two?" The test measures nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism, and presbyopia. It also determines the axis and cylinder values for astigmatism correction. A refraction is typically performed at every eye exam and may or may not be covered by vision insurance separately from the exam itself.
