Contact Lens Fitting

A contact lens fitting is a specialized eye exam to determine the correct type, size, and prescription of contact lenses, including evaluation of the eye's surface and tear film.

Definition

A contact lens fitting is a specialized eye exam to determine the correct type, size, and prescription of contact lenses, including evaluation of the eye's surface and tear film.

In-Depth

What You Need to Know

A contact lens fitting goes beyond a standard eye exam. The eye doctor measures the curvature of the cornea (keratometry), evaluates the size of the pupil and iris, assesses tear film quality and quantity, and determines the lifestyle needs of the patient. Trial lenses are then selected, and the patient wears them for a short period before a follow-up evaluation of fit, comfort, vision, and eye health. Different contact types (daily disposable, bi-weekly, monthly, toric for astigmatism, multifocal, rigid gas permeable) require different fitting approaches. A contact lens prescription is separate from an eyeglass prescription.
