In-Depth

What You Need to Know

Tetanus is a potentially life-threatening disease that causes severe muscle stiffness and spasms. The tetanus vaccine is most commonly given as part of the Tdap combination vaccine, which also protects against diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough). Adults should receive a booster every 10 years, but a booster may be needed sooner if a patient sustains a deep, dirty, or puncture wound and their last vaccination was more than five years ago. Urgent care clinics routinely administer tetanus boosters as part of wound care, particularly for lacerations, animal bites, and injuries involving rusty or contaminated objects. The injection is given in the arm muscle and side effects are generally mild, including soreness at the injection site.
