Auditory Brainstem Response

An objective electrophysiological test that measures the electrical activity of the auditory nerve and brainstem in response to sound. ABR testing evaluates hearing sensitivity without requiring the patient's active participation.

In-Depth

What You Need to Know

Auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing involves placing small electrodes on the patient's forehead and behind each ear to record neural activity as clicks or tones are played through earphones. The test produces waveforms that represent the sequential activation of auditory structures from the cochlea to the brainstem. ABR is the definitive test for estimating hearing thresholds in infants and young children who cannot participate in conventional hearing tests. It is also used to diagnose auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder and to screen for acoustic neuromas (vestibular schwannomas). The test typically takes 30 to 60 minutes for threshold estimation and requires the patient — particularly infants — to be still or asleep, so natural sleep or sedation may be necessary.
