In-Depth
What You Need to Know
Snoring occurs when airflow causes vibration of relaxed tissues in the throat, and it can be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea. ENT evaluation for snoring typically includes a thorough examination of the nose, throat, and palate, along with a sleep study to assess for sleep apnea. Treatment options range from conservative measures such as weight loss, positional therapy, and nasal strips to medical devices like CPAP machines and custom oral appliances. Surgical options may include septoplasty, turbinate reduction, tonsillectomy, uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP), or palatal implants depending on the anatomical source of obstruction. Newer minimally invasive procedures using radiofrequency energy or laser can be performed in the office with local anesthesia and shorter recovery times.
