Thyroid Ultrasound

In-Depth

What You Need to Know

Thyroid ultrasound is frequently performed in ENT offices as part of the evaluation of thyroid nodules, goiter, or neck masses. The painless exam typically takes 15 to 30 minutes and involves placing a transducer on the front of the neck to generate real-time images of the thyroid gland. Ultrasound can determine the size, number, and characteristics of thyroid nodules and help classify them using standardized risk-stratification systems such as TI-RADS. If a nodule appears suspicious, the ENT specialist may recommend a fine-needle aspiration biopsy, often performed under ultrasound guidance during the same visit. Regular ultrasound surveillance is also used to monitor known nodules for growth or changes over time.
