In-Depth

What You Need to Know

Flat feet are extremely common, with many people experiencing no symptoms at all. However, when flat feet cause pain, fatigue, or difficulty with activity, treatment is warranted. Symptoms typically include pain in the heel or arch area, swelling along the inside of the ankle, and difficulty standing on tiptoe. Conservative treatments include supportive footwear, custom orthotics, stretching exercises, and physical therapy to strengthen the muscles supporting the arch. For adults who develop flat feet later in life, the condition is often caused by posterior tibial tendon dysfunction, which may require more aggressive treatment. Surgical options for severe or progressive cases include tendon repair, bone realignment (osteotomy), or joint fusion to restore the arch and improve function.
