Toenail fungus is caused by dermatophyte fungi that thrive in warm, moist environments such as shoes, locker rooms, and swimming pool areas. The infection typically begins as a white or yellow spot under the tip of the toenail and progressively worsens, causing the nail to become thick, crumbly, and discolored. Treatment options include topical antifungal medications applied directly to the nail, oral antifungal medications such as terbinafine or itraconazole taken for several months, and laser therapy which targets the fungus with focused light energy. In severe cases, temporary or permanent nail removal may be necessary. Treatment requires patience, as toenails grow slowly and it may take six to twelve months or longer to see a completely clear nail.
