In-Depth
What You Need to Know
Laryngoscopy is an essential diagnostic tool for evaluating hoarseness, voice changes, throat pain, swallowing difficulties, chronic cough, and the sensation of a lump in the throat. Flexible laryngoscopy is performed in the office by passing a thin scope through the nose and down to the throat, typically taking only a few minutes with topical anesthesia. Rigid laryngoscopy or stroboscopy may be used for more detailed evaluation of vocal cord vibration and function. The procedure allows the ENT specialist to identify conditions such as vocal cord nodules, polyps, paralysis, laryngeal cancer, and acid reflux damage. Video recordings of the exam can be reviewed with the patient and used to track changes over time.
