In-Depth

What You Need to Know

Plantar warts are contracted when HPV enters the skin through tiny cuts or abrasions on the bottom of the foot, commonly in warm, moist environments such as pool decks, locker rooms, and communal showers. They appear as small, grainy, rough growths, often with black pinpoints (thrombosed capillaries) and may occur individually or in clusters called mosaic warts. While some plantar warts resolve on their own, many require professional treatment. Treatment options include cryotherapy (freezing with liquid nitrogen), topical medications containing salicylic acid, laser treatment, immunotherapy, and surgical excision for resistant warts. Multiple treatment sessions are often needed, and recurrence is possible because the virus may remain dormant in surrounding skin.
