In-Depth
What You Need to Know
DBT was originally developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan for borderline personality disorder (BPD) but has since been adapted for a wide range of conditions including chronic suicidality, self-harm, eating disorders, substance use disorders, PTSD, and treatment-resistant depression. DBT is based on the dialectic (balance) between acceptance and change. The four core skill modules are: mindfulness (present-moment awareness), distress tolerance (crisis survival without making things worse), emotion regulation (understanding and managing emotions), and interpersonal effectiveness (assertive communication and relationship management). Comprehensive DBT includes individual therapy, skills group, phone coaching, and a therapist consultation team.
