Metabolic Panel

A metabolic panel is a group of blood tests that measures glucose, electrolytes, kidney function, and liver function to assess the body's metabolic status.

Definition

A metabolic panel is a group of blood tests that measures glucose, electrolytes, kidney function, and liver function to assess the body's metabolic status.

In-Depth

What You Need to Know

There are two main types: the Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP, 8 tests) measures glucose, calcium, sodium, potassium, bicarbonate, chloride, BUN, and creatinine; the Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP, 14 tests) adds albumin, total protein, ALP, ALT, AST, and bilirubin for liver function assessment. These panels are routinely ordered during annual physicals, hospital admissions, and for monitoring patients on certain medications. Results help detect diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease, electrolyte imbalances, and other metabolic disorders. A 10-12 hour fast is typically required for accurate glucose readings.
