Blood Pressure Screening

A blood pressure screening is a quick, non-invasive test that measures the force of blood against arterial walls, expressed as systolic over diastolic pressure (e.g., 120/80 mmHg).

In-Depth

What You Need to Know

Blood pressure is one of the most important vital signs and a key predictor of cardiovascular health. Normal blood pressure is below 120/80 mmHg. Elevated is 120-129/<80. Stage 1 hypertension is 130-139/80-89, and Stage 2 is 140+/90+. A hypertensive crisis (180+/120+) requires immediate medical attention. The test takes under a minute using an inflatable cuff around the upper arm. White coat hypertension (elevated readings due to anxiety) is common, so providers may recommend home monitoring or 24-hour ambulatory monitoring for accurate diagnosis. The AHA recommends screening at least every 2 years for adults with normal readings, and more frequently for those at risk. Blood pressure screenings are covered as preventive care under the ACA with no cost-sharing.
