Breast Lift

A breast lift (mastopexy) is a surgical procedure that raises and reshapes sagging breasts by removing excess skin and tightening surrounding tissue to restore a youthful, uplifted contour.

Definition

A breast lift (mastopexy) is a surgical procedure that raises and reshapes sagging breasts by removing excess skin and tightening surrounding tissue to restore a youthful, uplifted contour.

In-Depth

What You Need to Know

Breast ptosis (sagging) is graded I-III based on the nipple position relative to the breast fold. A breast lift addresses the breast envelope (skin) but does not significantly change breast size. Common incision patterns include periareolar (around the areola only — for mild ptosis), vertical or lollipop (around the areola and straight down — for moderate ptosis), and anchor/inverted T (around the areola, straight down, and along the breast fold — for significant ptosis). A lift can be combined with implants for patients wanting both lift and volume, or with reduction for patients wanting a smaller size. The procedure takes 2-3 hours under general anesthesia. Recovery involves wearing a surgical bra for 4-6 weeks, limiting arm movement for 2 weeks, and full activity restriction for 6 weeks. Results are long-lasting but gravity, aging, and weight fluctuations will gradually affect the results over time.
