Plastic Surgery

Otoplasty

Otoplasty (ear surgery) is a cosmetic procedure that changes the shape, position, or proportion of the ears, most commonly performed to pin back protruding ears closer to the head.

Definition

In-Depth

What You Need to Know

Otoplasty is one of the few cosmetic procedures commonly performed on children — it can be done as early as age 5-6 when ear cartilage is stable enough for correction and before school-age teasing becomes an issue. The most common reason for otoplasty is prominent ears (ears that stick out more than 2cm from the head). Techniques include cartilage scoring, suture techniques (Mustardé and Furnas sutures), and cartilage excision. The procedure takes 1-2 hours under local anesthesia with sedation (adults) or general anesthesia (children). A headband is worn for 4-6 weeks post-surgery (full-time for 2 weeks, then nighttime only). Results are permanent. Other otoplasty procedures include earlobe repair (torn from earrings), earlobe reduction, and ear reconstruction for congenital deformities (microtia). Cost ranges from $3,000-$7,000. Insurance may cover otoplasty when deemed medically necessary for congenital deformities.
