Lipid Panel

A lipid panel is a blood test that measures cholesterol and triglyceride levels to assess cardiovascular disease risk, including total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides.

Definition

A lipid panel is a blood test that measures cholesterol and triglyceride levels to assess cardiovascular disease risk, including total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides.

In-Depth

What You Need to Know

A standard lipid panel measures four key values: Total Cholesterol (desirable <200 mg/dL), LDL "bad" cholesterol (optimal <100 mg/dL), HDL "good" cholesterol (optimal >60 mg/dL), and Triglycerides (normal <150 mg/dL). An advanced lipid panel may also measure VLDL, apolipoprotein B, and LDL particle size. Fasting for 9-12 hours before the test was traditionally required, but current guidelines say non-fasting panels are acceptable for initial screening. The USPSTF recommends lipid screening for all adults aged 20+ every 4-6 years, or more frequently with risk factors. Abnormal results may lead to lifestyle modification recommendations or statin medication. Lipid panels are covered as preventive care under the ACA.
