Pulpectomy

A pulpectomy is a dental procedure that removes all the pulp tissue from the crown and roots of a tooth, commonly performed on primary (baby) teeth to treat infection.

Definition

A pulpectomy is a dental procedure that removes all the pulp tissue from the crown and roots of a tooth, commonly performed on primary (baby) teeth to treat infection.

In-Depth

What You Need to Know

A pulpectomy is essentially a root canal for baby teeth. It is performed when the infection has spread from the crown to the root pulp of a primary tooth. The procedure involves removing all infected pulp, cleaning and disinfecting the canals, and filling them with a resorbable material that will dissolve as the baby tooth naturally falls out. Pulpectomy helps preserve the primary tooth until it is naturally lost, maintaining proper spacing for the permanent tooth. In permanent teeth, the equivalent procedure is called root canal therapy.
