In-Depth

What You Need to Know

Substance use disorders (SUDs) range from mild to severe and require integrated treatment addressing the biological, psychological, and social aspects of addiction. Outpatient treatment models include individual therapy (Motivational Interviewing, CBT for addiction, contingency management), Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP — 9-12 hours/week), and Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP — 20+ hours/week). Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is the gold standard for opioid use disorder (buprenorphine/Suboxone, naltrexone/Vivitrol, methadone) and alcohol use disorder (naltrexone, acamprosate, disulfiram). The ASAM (American Society of Addiction Medicine) criteria guide placement at the appropriate level of care based on withdrawal risk, medical conditions, emotional/behavioral conditions, readiness to change, relapse potential, and recovery environment. Dual diagnosis (co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders) is the norm, not the exception — 50% of individuals with SUDs have a co-occurring mental health condition. Family involvement and peer support (AA, NA, SMART Recovery) improve outcomes.
