In-Depth
What You Need to Know
Fat transfer provides a natural alternative to synthetic fillers and implants using the patient's own tissue (autologous). The process involves three steps: harvesting fat through liposuction (commonly from the abdomen, flanks, or thighs), processing the fat (washing, straining, and/or centrifuging to isolate viable fat cells), and injecting purified fat into the recipient area using small cannulas. Common recipient areas include the face (volume restoration, cheek augmentation), hands (rejuvenation), breasts (natural augmentation — typically 1 cup size increase), buttocks (BBL), and under the eyes (tear trough). Fat survival rates vary from 50-80% depending on the technique and area treated, meaning some volume loss occurs over the first 3-6 months. The surviving fat cells are permanent. Touch-up procedures may be needed. Fat transfer carries lower risk of allergic reaction since it uses the patient's own tissue.
